Have you ever had a hard time in
life and ask the question: God, where
are you? I need your help. Right
now!
The story in Acts16:16 – 40
is the tale of two men who, even though they were carrying out the will of God,
were beaten and thrown into the bottom of a dungeon. Even though the two men were having one of
the worst days any man could have, they still gave praise to our Father in
heaven. Severely flogged, bleeding,
bound by the feet and sure to be left for dead, they were still singing hymns
and praises to God.
Now you may stop and say, ‘hey,
wait a minute; I have had some really bad times in my life and I have to tell
you, there is no way I could just stop in the middle of everything and give
praise to God.’ In fact, most of us in
the worst times begin to ask God ‘why me? Why is this happening and what did I do to deserve this?’ The answer is simple, although difficult for
us to understand while we are in what feels like a bottomless pit: Everything that happens, good or bad, is
ultimately for God’s glory.
Ask yourself, do you think God
would allow one man to have troubled times, even die, if it meant that others
would come to know Jesus? After all, He
did send His only Son to die for us so that we would have eternal life.
The story goes on to say that
because of the bad days these men had, many saw God’s glory and came to know
Jesus. When we are in the bottomless
pit, we need to remember that God has chosen us, so that others may see His
glory and come to know Jesus.

We have all heard the story of
Moses and his trip across the desert with the masses, 2 million plus
people. But how many of us have actually
thought about what it took to make this trip? Converted into today’s language and measurements the following is a
pretty accurate account:
Food: According to the Quartermaster General of the
Army, feeding 2-3 million people would have required 1500 tons of food a
day. Transporting this food would
require two freight trains, each at least a mile long. Cooking: This would require firewood. A fair estimate would be 4000 tons of wood per day. A few more of those long freight trains would
be needed, per day! Water: Conservative use, drinking and washing dishes,
would consume 11,000,000 gallons each day. This would require an 1800 mile long freight train with tank cars. Now remember, the time frame is 40 years
and the figures quoted are for one day. Not to mention, there were no freight trains in those days. Moving along. Traveling: They had to
cross the Red Sea at night. If they went on a narrow path, double file,
the line would be 800 miles long and would require 35 days and nights to get
across. In order to cross in one night,
there had to be a space in the Red Sea three
miles wide, so they could walk 5000 abreast. Camping: At the end of
every day, they needed 750 square miles to camp or a campground two-thirds the
size of the state of Rhode Island.
Do you think Moses figured all
this out before he left Egypt? He didn’t need to; Moses believed and trusted
that God would provide the needs of his people. And He did.
So, when the road you are
traveling seems difficult at best, just remember, God is there and He will take
care of your needs. Hebrews 11:1 Now
faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Mark 11:22 So Jesus answered and said
to them, “Have faith in God.” Philippians
4:19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in
glory by Christ Jesus.

Once upon a time
there was a rich King who had four wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich
robes and treated her to the finest of delicacies. He gave her nothing but the best.
He also loved
the 3rd wife very much and was always showing her off to neighboring
kingdoms. However, he feared that one
day she would leave him for another.
He also loved
his 2nd wife. She was his
confidant and was always kind, considerate and patient with him. Whenever the King faced a problem, he could
confide in her, and she would help him get through the difficult times.
The King’s 1st
wife was a very loyal partner and had made great contributions in maintaining
his wealth and kingdom. However, he did
not love the first wife. Although she
loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her. One day, the
King fell ill and he knew his time was short. He thought of his luxurious life and wondered, “I now have four wives
with me, but when I die, I’ll be alone.”
Thus,
he asked the 4th wife, “I have loved you the most, endowed you with
the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I’m dying, will you follow me and
keep me company?” “No way”, replied the
wife, and she walked away without another word. Her answer cut like a sharp knife right into his heart.
The
sad King then asked the 3rd wife, “I have loved you all my
life. Now that I’m dying, will you
follow me and keep me company?” “No!” replied the 3rd wife. “Life is
too good! When you die, I’m going to remarry! His heart sank and turned cold.
He
then asked the 2nd wife, “I have always turned to you for help and
you’ve always been there for me. When I
die, will you follow me and keep me company?” I’m sorry, I can’t help you out this time!” replied the 2nd
wife. “At the very most, I can only send
you to your grave. “Her answer came like
a bolt of lightning, and the King was devastated.
Then a voice
called out: “I’ll leave with you and
follow you no matter where you go.” The King looked up, and
there was his first wife. She was so
skinny as she suffered from malnutrition and neglect. Greatly grieved, the King said, “I should
have taken much better care of you when I had the chance!”
In truth, we all
have 4 wives in our lives. Our 4th
wife is our body. No matter how much
time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it will leave us when we
die. Our 3rd wife
is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, it will all go to others. Our 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how much they have been there for
us, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave. Our 1st wife is our Soul,
often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures of the world. However, our Soul is the only thing that will
follow us wherever we go. So cultivate,
strengthen and cherish it now, for it is the only part of us who will
follow us to the throne of God and continue with us through eternity.

Malachi 3:3 He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver.
This verse puzzled some women in a Bible Study and they wondered what
this statement meant about the character of God.
One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and
get back to the group at their next Bible Study.
The woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at
work. She didn’t mention anything about
the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining
silver.
As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire
and let it heat up. He explained that in
refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire, where
the flames were the hottest, to burn away all the impurities.
The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot then she
thought again about Malachi 3:3 He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver.
She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in
front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered yes, that he not only had to
sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the
entire time it was in the fire. If the
silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.
The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, “How do you know when the silver is
fully refined?” He smiled at her and
answered, “Oh, that’s easy—when I see my image in it.”
If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has
His eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image
in you! God Bless, Pastor Woody
